Can You Use A Welding Helmet to View Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare occurrence when the moon moves between the sun and the earth. During this phase, the moon causes the light of the sun to be blocked from reaching earth, casting a shadow on earth. It is a very rare and special occasion when people from all over the world get excited to witness it.

But the excitement will be ruined if you watch the solar eclipse with your naked eyes. If you expose your eyes to the sun without proper eye protection during a solar eclipse, then it can cause “eclipse blindness” or retinal burns, known as solar retinopathy. It can damage or even destroy cells in the retina. The damage can be temporary as well as permanent that occurs with no pain. You can’t know instantly as it takes a few hours to a few days after viewing solar eclipse to know about the danger.

So, you must wear a protective glass to avoid any harm that comes to your eyes and today; we have come with a perfect and easy solution.

How can Welding Helmets be used to view the Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a big happening that doesn’t occur every day. It is a pretty big deal everywhere, and everyone wants to have a view of it. You must use a protective glass while viewing it as you certainly don’t want to ruin your vision in excitement.

As people have often made this mistake in the past, even NASA has something to say about this. NASA has stated that if your eclipse glasses or viewers are compliments with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, you may look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through them for as long as you wish.

The ISO standard should be printed on the glass, and if your glasses have wordage like only used for 3 minutes at a time, then these are outdated one. If you look at their prices on Amazon or in eBay, it costs $10 or even more for one, and you have to buy in a multi-pack. The price is very high for a few minutes of view.

We have  provided you with some awesome welding helmets with whom you can view the eclipse without any harming your eyes:

According to NASA, those welding helmet that has shade 12 or higher can be used to view the eclipse safely. These are much darker than the filters used during most types of welding. So, be careful don’t use them to look directly at the sun if there are any just lying around.

Also, most people find the sun too bright in Shade 12, while some find sun too dim in Shade 14. Shade 12 is the best and is recommended for a safe view. NASA further warns that if your welding helmet is less than 12 shade, then don’t even think of using it to look at the sun.
